Does the Composition of Metal Working Fluids Change with Storage or Use?

The short answer is yes! When stored for a long period of time, nitrosamines form in water based metal working fluids. The nitrosamines and react with the nitrites in the fluid, the can that it is stored in or the air and can produce harmful carcinogens.

Another issue with prolonged storage is the growth of bacteria and fungi in water based metal working fluids. Contaminated MWFs can have hazardous properties.

MWFs can also be contaminated by “tramp” oil (oil used for lubricating machines) and small particles of metal or alloy. MWFs may also be contaminated by water, cleaning products used for routine housekeeping, or other products at the work site.
